Sharjah Light Festival Guide: 2026 Edition Recap and Planning for Next Year

What the Sharjah Light Festival is, what happened at the 15th edition (3–15 February 2026), how its venues work and how to plan for the next edition.

The Sharjah Light Festival is an annual event that turns landmark buildings and public spaces into canvases for large-scale light shows. The 15th edition ran from 3 to 15 February 2026 (13 nights) under the theme “Lights That Tell Our Story”, organised by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) (WAM). The next edition’s dates had not been announced in the sources we checked, so what follows is a recap, with advice on how to plan.

The 2026 edition at a glance

  • Dates: 3 to 15 February 2026.
  • Theme: “Lights That Tell Our Story”.
  • Light shows: staged at 13 locations across Sharjah.
  • Light Village: ran from 29 January to 22 February 2026, extending the experience beyond the main festival nights.
  • Closing: the festival concluded with a final show at House of Wisdom, according to WAM.

A short history

According to the festival’s own history page, the festival grew out of earlier light displays and became a major annual attraction; it records more than 1.2 million visitors over 11 days in 2019, the year Sharjah was UNESCO World Book Capital (Sharjah Light Festival). The same page lists Sharjah’s earlier UNESCO titles: Arab Culture Capital (1998), Islamic Culture Capital (2014), Arab Tourism Capital (2015) and World Book Capital (2019).

How the festival works

The festival is built on installations and projection shows on buildings and in public spaces, with a Light Village of food, retail and entertainment in selected years. Locations vary by edition, so use the official programme for exact addresses.

How to plan for the next edition

  1. Wait for the official announcement. SCTDA and the festival site publish dates, theme and location lists. Do not rely on last year’s dates.
  2. Pick two or three venues, not all of them. With shows spread across the city, route planning matters.
  3. Go early on weekdays for lighter crowds, and consider public transport or ride-hailing on weekend nights.
  4. Combine with daytime sights such as the Heart of Sharjah and other attractions.
  5. Book hotels early if you plan to stay, as popular nights fill up.

Where the venues are

Many of the festival’s locations are in central Sharjah. For the rest of the year, see the Sharjah events calendar.

What the 2026 edition set out to do

According to WAM’s closing report (17 February 2026), the festival gave international artists a platform to present light displays and interactive digital technologies that reflected the emirate’s cultural identity, heritage, architectural beauty and urban development, over 13 days and at 13 locations. The closing ceremony was held at the House of Wisdom, with the Light Village continuing to 22 February as a family-friendly space for national projects. The SCTDA chairman, Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, said the festival also contributes to tourism and supports the local economy; that is the authority’s own assessment.

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry also ran a family and children’s entertainment pavilion at the Light Village as part of Sharjah Shopping Promotions 2025–2026, according to Sharjah24 (Sharjah24, 11 Feb 2026). Pavilions and activities differ by year, so treat these as examples, not a fixed line-up.

A simple evening plan

If you only have one night, try this: reach the Light Village early for food and family activities, walk to one nearby show as the lights come on, and add a second location only if the crowds allow. Keep the car or ride-hailing pick-up point flexible, because road closures near venues are common at large events; check the festival’s official programme for any traffic notes.

What to bring

  • Comfortable shoes: the experience is mostly walking between installations.
  • A light layer: February evenings can be cooler than daytime.
  • A charged phone and a screenshot of the official location map in case of weak signal.
  • Patience for queues at popular shows, especially on weekend nights.
